About EARL

EARL Canteen came about because two hungry waiters spent too much time watching chefs in fancy restaurants making a snack with ingredients destined for diners plates and two pieces of bread. It was the ultimate staff meal. They decided to do something about it.

So sandwiches are what EARL does. Not just any sandwich, but what we have labeled ‘restaurant quality’ sandwiches. Words don’t equal taste however, so this is what our philosophy is all about.

We use the very best ingredients we can find. We source locally, seasonally, ethically and sustainably. We also deal with suppliers we like. We actually know the farmer who is responsible for your wagyu meatballs. It seems strange we know but we like talking to people, not corporations.

We employ staff who share the same passions about food as us. We don’t have chefs and waiters. We all get it. So if your waiter one day is carving your pork belly the next, it’s the way it’s meant to be.

We have found some nifty packaging. No, really its great. The best part is that its all biodegradable and compostable. We hate to think how big that mountain of used takeaway coffee cups is somewhere, thankfully ours won’t be in there. It looks pretty smart too.

We make to order from the main menu. Yes, thats right, we don’t cook it or heat it until you order it. It comes to you fresh, the way it was intended and you will taste the difference. Best of all, it’s still super quick.

EARL Canteen opens from 7.30 Monday – Friday. Breakfast is until 10.30am and lunch is until 5pm. That’s right a real lunch at our end of town until 5pm.

We can’t survive on sandwiches alone however and there are other strings to our bow. Breakfast is baking time and there is always a warm muffin or friand to be found. We make our own crumpets, a mean frittata and we have a lifetime of experience with breakfast oats. After 11am you can check out our creative flair with salads, we are always dreaming up new combos. If you can’t decide, lunch boxes are for you. Sandwich, salad and a sweet. Quick, fresh, tasty, easy. Every day from 11am but if you need one earlier give us a call.

To sound cliched, eat-in or takeaway? We have tables, just not many, and we offer table service. Everything is designed and available to takeaway. And yes, despite the fact the coffee machine is not instantly recognisable, we do make a great coffee as well.
